Dr. J.Wafula Aleri (left), a lecturer at the Department of Clinical Studies has been named this year’s winner of the Gustav Rosenberger Young scientist Cattle award.  The Gustav Rosenberger Memorial Fund (GRMF) is an international award in tribute to Dr Gustav Rosenberger and is related to the World Association for Buiatrics. The award was initiated, with the objective to ‘further improve bovine medicine at an international level and to stimulate bovine research in its broadest sense’. To realize that objective, bovine scientists have been awarded by grants and prizes, mainly being young scientists.

Intercontinental University Games Officially Kicks Off

The 7th All Africa University Games kicked off today at the University of Nairobi (UoN) Sports Grounds with 13 countries from different parts of Africa and 500 athletes participating.  The games to be competed in include soccer, karate, netball, swimming, table tennis, track and field events, American football, and volleyball.

Officiating the official opening of the games, FASU President, Dr. Ralethe Malumbete, said that the objectives of the games were to promote sports, provide networking opportunities and promote cooperation amongst universities. The athletes would also be accorded with opportunities to compete at inter-university world games.

CERTIFICATE TRAINING IN SURVEILLANCE AND EPIDEMIOLOGY OF TRADE-RELATED TRANSBOUNDARY ANIMAL DISEASES IS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED

The certificate training in surveillance and epidemiology of trade-related transboundary animal diseases that was launched on February 24, 2014 was successfully concluded yesterday, Thursday 22nd May 2014 at the Kenya School of Government. The training was officially closed in a colourful ceremony attended by representatives from African Union-InterAfrican Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR), Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Department of Veterinary Services, State Department of Livestock, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries and the University of Nairobi among other guests. The Department of Public Health, Pharmaacology and Toxicology won a consultancy to train veterinary staff from the Greater Horn of Africa on Surveillance and Epidemiology of trade-related Transboundary Animal Diseases (TADs). The 28 participants attending the training are drawn from six countries including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Southern Sudan, Ethiopia, and Djibouti. The three-month training will lead to the award of Certificate in Surveillance and Epidemiology of trade-related Transboundary Animal Diseases. The training is being facilitated by African Union- InterAfrican Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) with funding from United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Training started on 24th February 2014 and will end on 23rd May 2014.
