From 15-18 March, the 3rd International One Health Congress (IOHC2015) will be organized in RAI Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The 3rd International One Health Congress brings science and policy together aiming at the early recognition and control of emerging (infectious) diseases that have a growing impact on humans, animals and their ecosystems. Prof. Peter M.F. Mbithi has been appointed the new Vice Chancellor of the University of Nairobi with effect from 6th January, 2015 for a five-year term renewable once. The formal appointment was made by the Cabinet Secretary, Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi as per Section 39, of the Universities Act 2012.

Transformative Solutions are novel research based ideas, or variations on existing ideas, that can cause a shift in thinking, inspire change, and influence outcomes cost-effectively with the ultimate goal of scaling up across multiple countries and/or disciplines.

ConDev is awarding grants up to $25,000. The average individual award amount will be about $15,000. Following a visit by a group of German students and a lecturer from Free University of Berlin, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine to the University of Nairobi, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the two universities entered an MOU.
They visited during the August long holiday, the year 2013.Most students were off session so, a few were called upon to come and give them a tour guide around the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, showing them around the various departments and what goes on. Apart from visiting our Faculty, they also visited Egerton University located in Nakuru county (Njoro) and the North Horr where they were studying Tropical Medicine and had a lot to say about their experiences over there. One Health Central and Eastern Africa (OHCEA) and the Makerere University School of Public Health recently received research funding for an EcoHealth Chair on Human and Animal Health in Protected Ecosystems of Central and Eastern Africa. The EcoHealth approach emphasizes working with all stakeholders in identifying health vulnerabilities in communities using participatory methodologies. The research area is at the human-animal-wildlife interface in fishing enclaves and cattle keeping communities inside Queen Elizabeth National Park. The applicants will be stationed in the communities during the identification, ranking, and prioritization/sampling for health vulnerabilities phase and later perform quantification and characterization studies at their institutions.

Requirements for the PhD applicants (4 positions):

Prospective PhD applicants to the Ecohealth project should meet the following minimum requirements.

  1. Be a citizen of one of the OHCEA member countries.
  2. Have a Master’s degree relevant to the proposed field of study;
  3. Be willing to spend some considerable time in the study area, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda and have their studies at Makerere University.
  4. Show willingness to work in a multidisciplinary and multistakeholder environment and be able to meet tight deadlines.

Intercontinental University Games Officially Kicks Off

The 7th All Africa University Games kicked off today at the University of Nairobi (UoN) Sports Grounds with 13 countries from different parts of Africa and 500 athletes participating.  The games to be competed in include soccer, karate, netball, swimming, table tennis, track and field events, American football, and volleyball.

Officiating the official opening of the games, FASU President, Dr. Ralethe Malumbete, said that the objectives of the games were to promote sports, provide networking opportunities and promote cooperation amongst universities. The athletes would also be accorded with opportunities to compete at inter-university world games.

The Department of Public Health, Pharmaacology and Toxicology won a consultancy to train veterinary staff from the Greater Horn of Africa on Surveillance and Epidemiology of trade-related Transboundary Animal Diseases (TADs). The 28 participants attending the training are drawn from six countries including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Southern Sudan, Ethiopia, and Djibouti. The three-month training will lead to the award of Certificate in Surveillance and Epidemiology of trade-related Transboundary Animal Diseases. The training is being facilitated by African Union- InterAfrican Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) with funding from United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Training started on 24th February 2014 and will end on 23rd May 2014.
