Visit by Dr. Martin Frey and Dr. Demarious Frey

On 15th June, 2017, the Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Prof. Maingi met with Dr. Martin R. Frey (DVM) and his wife Dr. Demarious K. Frey (DVM) from Texas, USA. Dr. Martin graduated from Kansas State University in 1956, while Dr. Demarious graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1963. The couple had paid a courtesy call to the Dean to familiarize themselves with the Veterinary School at Kabete.

 

Dr. Martin and Dr. Demarious previous visited Nairobi in 1964 on their way to South Africa for the World Veterinary Congress. During the stopover in Nairobi, they and had discussions with the then head of the Veterinary School, University of Nairobi. Dr. Martin worked in Ethiopia in the 60s at the Haile Selassie I University of Agriculture. The couple, who are now retired, then established a Small Animal and Equine Clinic in Texas.  

 

The discussion with Prof. Maingi focused on possible linkages with researchers and professors in the USA. Those who may be interested in the linkages are:

  1. Professor Tilahun Yilma, (D.V.M., Ph.D.) of the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, University of California, Davis, USA. His research interests are Microbiology, Vaccine development, Vesicular Stomatitis, AIDS, Rinderpest, Smallpox, Transfer of technology, Vaccinia virus recombinants, Biotechnology, Animal vaccines, Molecular Biology, Virology, Baculovirus Expression System, Immunology, Diagnostic kits, Interferons, Adjuvant/Immune-enhancing Genes, Immuno-modulating Genes.

 

  1. Professor Linda L Logan (Ph.D. Comparative Pathology, D.V.M., M.S. Veterinary Parasitology, B.S. Zoology of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biochemical Sciences, Texas A & M University, USA.

 

The couple then met 5th year BVM students who were busy with their end of year oral examinations in Diagnostic Pathology in the Department of Veterinary Pathology, Microbiology and Parasitology. They gave the students words of encouragement, wisdom and advice in the practice of Veterinary Medicine.
